Napp Pharmaceutical - Document Scanning Success Story
Napp Pharmaceuticals Limited (NPL) is a privately owned pharmaceutical research company based in Cambridge. It develops analgesic, cardiovascular and other medicines for independent associated companies around the world. NPL’s research and development team is dedicated to bringing new medications to the European market and to making life more comfortable for patients with serious medical conditions.
NPL have a large archive of vital information relating to their product development and testing. Over the last 22 years, whilst at the Cambridge site, all laboratory work has been painstakingly recorded in specialist notebooks as it occurs. This has resulted in well over 2000 separate hard bound notebooks, which due to the limitations of space, are mostly stored in a separate, contract facility. This meant it was becoming increasingly difficult to find and retrieve information quickly when needed. Added to this was the risk factor of maintaining just one copy of each document when faced with the unpleasant possibility of fire or flood.
The potential ramifications of lost or destroyed documentation in pharmaceutical research are enormous. The notebook contents may constitute a vital resource which NPL can rely on to prove their intellectual property rights in court during an ownership dispute. NPL were understandably keen to address the issue and grasp the potential benefits of electronic data capture and storage to protect such valuable information.
