Latest news on Canada Post and Union’s Negotiations

We know that the end of 2024 has been challenging for you due to the Canada Post strike that occurred from November 15th to December 17th. We want to make sure that we always have you covered, so here are the latest updates:

Negotiations between Canada Post and the Canada Union Postal Workers (CUPW) resumed during the first weekend of March. Canada Post has proposed several changes aimed at improving flexibility and competitiveness:

  1. Flexible Staffing Model:
    • Introduction of new part-time flex positions with guaranteed hours on weekdays.
    • This model aims to provide greater opportunities for work at regular rates of pay.
  2. Matching Labour Requirements:
    • Provisions to better align labor needs with fluctuating mail and parcel volumes.
    • These changes are designed to maintain significant protections for employees, including renewing job security provisions for regular employees.

Unfortunately, no agreement has been reached between the two parties yet. However, Canada Post remains committed to negotiating new collective agreements.

Canada Post and the Union are participating in hearings as part of the Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC). The goal here is to respond to their changing needs and address the challenges they are facing.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 25. A deal needs to be reached by May 22, otherwise Canada’s postal strike could resume.
